Wetlands such as marshes are zones covered with water on a seasonal basis. They are some of the most productive areas in the world. Many fishes, birds and mammals feed, reproduce and find refuge in marshes.

Wetlands contribute in purifying water and filter pollutants that flow out into our lakes and rivers. They also contribute to stabilizing banks and they protect against riverside erosion. Finally, at times of heavy precipitations and in periods of flood, wetlands act like big sponges by absorbing excess water and reducing floods.
